Summary
This activity is designed to improve sentence accuracy and complexity. Most students can produce the key content words in a sentence. However, they have difficulty with accuracy because the functional words are difficult or can seem unimportant. This activity will help learners eliminate problems with these functional words by giving them immediate feedback on the mistakes they are making. It will also help students develop their use of more natural, varied and complex sentence structures.
TIP: Say the sentence out loud. Notice the types of mistake you make often. Focus on those types of errors. (singular/plural, subject-verb agreement, article use, prepositions, gerunds and infinitives, noun clauses, adjective clauses, word order, and word forms.)

Seb: You know, I just think that people, when they say that they, you know, hate jazz, they just they don't have context. They don't know where it comes from, you know?
Seb: Jazz was born in a little flophouse in New Orleans, and then just because people were crammed in there. They spoke five different languages. They couldn't talk to each other. The only way that they could communicate was with jazz.
Mia: Yeah, well, what about Kenny G?
Seb: What?
Mia: What about Kenny G? I mean, what about elevator music? You know? Jazz music that I know.
Seb: What about it?
Mia: From my life.
Seb: Mm-hmm.
Mia: I just... I mean, I find it relaxing.
Seb: It's not relaxing. It's not! It's not. Sidney Bechet shot somebody because they told him he played a wrong note. That's hardly relaxing.
Mia: Yeah, but where I grew up there was this station called KJAZZ 103. And people would just put on that station when they had a cocktail party.
Seb: Right.
Mia: And everyone would kind of just talk over it.
Seb: I know. Okay. O-kay. So I think that that's part of the problem, is that you can't hear it, you know? You have to see it, you have to see... what's at stake.
Seb: I mean, look at these fellas. Look at... Look at the... the sax player right now. He just hijacked the song. He's on his own trail.
Seb: Everyone of these guys are composing, rearranging, they're writing. And they're playing the melody.
Seb: They're just... And now look, the trumpet player. He's got his own idea. And so it's conflict, and it's compromise, and it's just... It's new every time. It's brand new every night. It's very, very exciting.
Seb: And it's dying. It's dying, Mia. It's dying on the vine. And the world says, "Let it die. It had its time." Well, not on my watch.
Mia: What are you going to do?
Seb: I'll have my own club.
Mia: Really?
Seb: Yes. We're gonna play whatever we want, whenever we want, however we want, as long as it's pure jazz.
Mia: Hi, this is Mia Dolan. Yeah, I just missed a call.
Mia: I got a callback.
Seb: What?! Come on! For what?!
Mia: For a TV show! The one I was telling you about. Really.
Seb: The Dangerous Minds meets The O.C.?
Mia: Yeah.
Seb: Congratulations! That's incredible.
Mia: It's really exciting. I feel like I said negative stuff about it before.
Seb: What?
Mia: It's like "Rebel Without a Cause" sort of.
Seb: "I got the bullets!"
Mia: Yes.
Seb: You've never seen it!
Mia: I've never seen it.
Seb: Oh my. You know, it's playing at the Rialto.
Mia: Really?
Seb: Yes. You should go. I mean, I'll go. I'll go. I can take you.
Mia: Okay.
Seb: You know, for research.
Mia: For research.
Seb: Yeah.
Mia: Yeah.
Seb: Okay. Uh, Monday night, ten o'clock.
Mia: Yeah! Great!
Seb: Okay!
Mia: For research.
