Summary

This activity is designed to improve sentence accuracy and complexity. Most students can produce the key content words in a sentence. However, they have difficulty with accuracy because the functional words are difficult or can seem unimportant. This activity will help learners eliminate problems with these functional words by giving them immediate feedback on the mistakes they are making. It will also help students develop their use of more natural, varied and complex sentence structures.

TIP: Say the sentence out loud. Notice the types of mistake you make often. Focus on those types of errors. (singular/plural, subject-verb agreement, article use, prepositions, gerunds and infinitives, noun clauses, adjective clauses, word order, and word forms.)

Listen & Repeat

This activity has two purposes.

The first purpose is to improve listening accuracy. Learners can often understand the general meaning of a video but still not hear and understand many of the words that are said. This is because native speakers tend to say the functional words unclearly. (eg. don’t know, going to, want to, can’t, must have) This activity is designed to help learners improve their ability to hear these words.

TIP: Learners should listen, and then try to repeat exactly what they hear. Then they should click “Show” and read the sentence. After reading the sentence, learners should listen again and try to hear each word.

The second purpose is to improve pronunciation.

TIP: Learners should listen to and read the sentences at the same time. Then learners should try to copy the pronunciation and intonation of the speaker exactly.

TIP: Exaggerating the intonation and feeling of the speaker is useful. It may feel awkward or funny, but it will help you sound more natural.

Escuchar y Repetir

Ouvir e repetir

Esta atividade tem dois propósitos.

O primeiro objetivo é melhorar a precisão auditiva.

O segundo objetivo é melhorar a pronúncia.

DICA: os alunos devem ouvir e ler as frases ao mesmo tempo. Em seguida, os alunos devem tentar copiar exatamente a pronúncia e a entonação do falante.

DICA: É útil exagerar na entonação e no sentimento do falante. Pode parecer estranho ou engraçado, mas ajudará você a soar mais natural.

Jay: What the hell is that?

Manny: A fiber-optic tree. It's way better for the environment than a real one.

Jay: Not if the environment is my living room.

Manny: Look, I admit, it takes some getting used to, but so did Greek yogurt. Now I can't even remember how the old stuff tastes.

Jay: Why do we keep changing things that don't need changing? Christmas is real trees and eggnog, Perry Como and Bing on the hi-fi.

Manny: Now you're just making up words.

Jay: I'm drawing a line in the sand. We're going to get a real tree, and we're going to cut it down like I did when I was a kid. Follow me.

Claire: Hi, dad.

Jay: Can't talk. Saving Christmas.

Claire: Oh.

Jay: No. Bang. I know we've been hiking for an hour, but (it's) worth it when you look at this beauty, huh? That's why you don't cut down the first tree you see.

Manny: This is literally the first tree we saw. There's our car.

Jay: No, we started that way.

Manny: So, you're arguing that we walked entirely around the earth?

Jay: Give me the axe.

Jay: Don't give me that look. Trees are like women. The best ones make you work a little bit harder.

Manny: She's just not that into you.

Jay: Pull! Pull! Pull! Yeah. Hey, take a break.

Manny: This is taking forever.

Jay: It's supposed to. (It) Took my dad and I all day to get a tree. And when he finally brought her down, he used to celebrate with a cigar. I was just a kid, so I'd have a cigarette.

Jay: All right. Grab the other end. There we go. Now we got a groove. Yeah. There we --

Manny: It won't budge!

Jay: (What) The hell is this wood made of? They ought to make saws out of it!

Manny: Let's face it. The tree's beaten us.

Jay: Hey, we're Pritchetts. We don't quit. Besides, all my tools are stuck in it.

Jay: I got it. It's simple physics. A little pressure, the thing will snap where we put the blade in. Done.

Manny: Just hit the gas.

Jay: It's working. That's why they call it Yankee engine-- Get down!

Manny: It's bald on one side now!

Jay: It'll be fine! We'll just comb over some branches!

Jay: In hindsight, the cigar was a mistake.

Manny: So, what do we do now?

Jay: We go home.

Manny: I thought Pritchetts never give up.

Jay: They know when to give up, which is its own kind of victory.

Manny: Unless...

Jay: What?

Manny: No it's crazy. Unless...

Jay: Are you really going to make me ask you again?

Manny: We somehow apply pressure to the axe-head already in the tree. I bet we can use the jack from the car.

Jay: Of course. The upward motion will split the trunk.

Manny: Yeah.

Manny: We can always tell people that's how we did it.

Jay: That is how we did it.

Voice: People love getting new things, but the best stuff has a story behind it.

Jay: Damn fine tree.

Manny: Except the saw's still stuck in the truck.

Jay: Yeah, you're going to want to keep your brother away from that, huh?
