triangle Summary 요약 Resumen [ ? ]

Summary

This activity is designed to improve sentence accuracy and complexity. Most students can produce the key content words in a sentence. However, they have difficulty with accuracy because the functional words are difficult or can seem unimportant. This activity will help learners eliminate problems with these functional words by giving them immediate feedback on the mistakes they are making. It will also help students develop their use of more natural, varied and complex sentence structures.

TIP: Say the sentence out loud. Notice the types of mistake you make often. Focus on those types of errors. (singular/plural, subject-verb agreement, article use, prepositions, gerunds and infinitives, noun clauses, adjective clauses, word order, and word forms.)

triangle Listen & Repeat 듣고 따라하기 Escuchar y repetir [ ? ]

Listen & Repeat

This activity has two purposes.

The first purpose is to improve listening accuracy. Learners can often understand the general meaning of a video but still not hear and understand many of the words that are said. This is because native speakers tend to say the functional words unclearly. (eg. don’t know, going to, want to, can’t, must have) This activity is designed to help learners improve their ability to hear these words.

TIP: Learners should listen, and then try to repeat exactly what they hear. Then they should click “Show” and read the sentence. After reading the sentence, learners should listen again and try to hear each word.

The second purpose is to improve pronunciation.

TIP: Learners should listen to and read the sentences at the same time. Then learners should try to copy the pronunciation and intonation of the speaker exactly.

TIP: Exaggerating the intonation and feeling of the speaker is useful. It may feel awkward or funny, but it will help you sound more natural.

Escuchar y Repetir

  1. Luke was angry because Manny said Luke was his nephew. Do you think Manny is being rude or disrespectful to Luke? Do you think Luke is overreacting? Why?
  2. Why does Gloria say that Luke is "different"? Why does Claire say that Manny is "different"?
  3. Based on this video (or hopefully your knowledge of Modern Family in general), who do you think is weirder - Luke or Manny? Why?
  4. Phil and Jay give their wives opposite advice. What advice do they give, and what do we learn about their characters from the advice that they give?
  5. Did you ever get in any fights in school? What were you fighting about? Did you win or lose? How were you punished?
  6. Were you a troublemaker in school? Did your parents ever get called in to school to talk to the principal?
  7. How did you dress in middle and high school? What was your style? Were you fashionable?
  8. When did you start wearing aftershave, cologne, or perfume? What is the difference between aftershave, cologne, or perfume?

Claire: I bet it was that Durkas kid.

Phil: I hate that kid.

Claire: He probably jumped on Luke and Luke just fought back. The kid's a menace.

Phil: He made fun of my hair once.

Claire: Shh. The parents are probably in there.

Phil: I slept on it funny. Like that never happened to him?

Claire: What are you doing here?

Jay: These two knuckleheads were fighting.

Claire: What?!

Phil: Could have been worse. I was not ready to face Durkas today.

Claire: So, what happened?

Principal: Well. Apparently, there was some name-calling and shoving on the playground. By the time a teacher separated them, Luke was sitting on Manny's chest.

Jay: Luke, that's not like you.

Principal: Wait a minute. You're Luke's father?

Jay: Grandfather.

Principal: So Manny's father is...

Gloria: Javier. Crazy guy. That's where he gets his fire.

Principal: Okay, you're...

Claire: He's our son.

Jay: And my grandson.

Claire: I'm his daughter.

Principal: So, you're...

Manny: His uncle.

Luke: Stop saying that, or I'll sit on your chest again!

Claire: Wait a second. Is that what this was all about?

Luke: He keeps calling me his nephew.

Manny: You are my nephew!

Luke: Shut up!

Principal: I'm getting the sense that you're all related... somehow. It's best if you work this out at home so the boys can go back to class, okay? But we're not happy about this, boys. This is not how mature young men behave. Here's your note for Miss Passwater.

Principal: Look. I wouldn't worry. They're good kids. It's just tough when one kid's a little different.

Gloria: Yes.

Claire: Yes.

Claire: You heard how she said that, right? "Yes." She thought Luke was the weird one. Luke.

Gloria: Her kid gets his head stuck in the furniture, and Manny is the different one.

Claire: I will tell you what's weird. Our son is not weird. What's weird is that her kid wears aftershave and dresses like a count.

Gloria: I think we should cancel with them for the barbecue.

Phil: If we cancel, it'll just make this a bigger deal than it is. It'll be good for Luke and Manny to spend some time. Might be good for you and Gloria too.

Claire: Why?

Gloria: She's always had a problem with me. I think I'm going to find out what it is.

Jay: That's the worst thing you could do. Just sweep it under the rug.

Gloria: I'm not a sweeper.

Jay: Trust me on this.

Phil: I think you two need to talk it out.

Claire: I don't have anything to say to her. She's the one with the problem, not me.

Gloria: Whose side are you on?

Jay: She's my daughter. You're my wife. Let's remember what's important here. There's a football game on.

Phil: I just hate it when my two girls aren't getting along.

Claire: How exactly is she your girl?
