triangle Sentence Building (Summary) 문장 만들기 Construção de sentença Construcción de oraciones [ ? ]

Summary

This activity is designed to improve sentence accuracy and complexity. Most students can produce the key content words in a sentence. However, they have difficulty with accuracy because the functional words are difficult or can seem unimportant. This activity will help learners eliminate problems with these functional words by giving them immediate feedback on the mistakes they are making. It will also help students develop their use of more natural, varied and complex sentence structures.

TIP: Say the sentence out loud. Notice the types of mistake you make often. Focus on those types of errors. (singular/plural, subject-verb agreement, article use, prepositions, gerunds and infinitives, noun clauses, adjective clauses, word order, and word forms.)

triangle Listen & Repeat 듣고 따라하기 Ouça e repita Escuchar y repetir [ ? ]

Listen & Repeat

This activity has two purposes.

The first purpose is to improve listening accuracy. Learners can often understand the general meaning of a video but still not hear and understand many of the words that are said. This is because native speakers tend to say the functional words unclearly. (eg. don’t know, going to, want to, can’t, must have) This activity is designed to help learners improve their ability to hear these words.

TIP: Learners should listen, and then try to repeat exactly what they hear. Then they should click “Show” and read the sentence. After reading the sentence, learners should listen again and try to hear each word.

The second purpose is to improve pronunciation.

TIP: Learners should listen to and read the sentences at the same time. Then learners should try to copy the pronunciation and intonation of the speaker exactly.

TIP: Exaggerating the intonation and feeling of the speaker is useful. It may feel awkward or funny, but it will help you sound more natural.

Escuchar y Repetir

Ouvir e repetir

Esta atividade tem dois propósitos.

O primeiro objetivo é melhorar a precisão auditiva.

O segundo objetivo é melhorar a pronúncia.

DICA: os alunos devem ouvir e ler as frases ao mesmo tempo. Em seguida, os alunos devem tentar copiar exatamente a pronúncia e a entonação do falante.

DICA: É útil exagerar na entonação e no sentimento do falante. Pode parecer estranho ou engraçado, mas ajudará você a soar mais natural.

triangle Grammar 문법 Gramática Gramática (phrasal verbs)

  • IDEA 1 | Phrasal verbs are verbs with two parts: base verb (get, set, put) + particle (down, back, off). The particle changes the meaning of the base verb.

get over   »   recover, become healthy again
get on   »   enter a bus, plane, train
go back   »   return (to a place)
go out   »   leave the house and do something fun
    hang on   »   wait
hang up   »   end a phone conversation
set off   »   begin a trip
    set up   »   organize, arrange
show around   »   give a tour of a place
    show up   »   appear, arrive

  • IDEA 2 | Some phrasal verbs are intransitive. They don't use an object.

    Please hang on.
    Please hang on Rob. intransitive
    Please hang Rob on. intransitive
    Please hang on him. intransitive
    Please hang him on. intransitive

    ★ intransitive = can't have an object

  • IDEA 3 | Some phrasal verbs are transitive and separable. They use an object. If the object is a noun, the object can go after the particle or between the base verb and the particle. If the object is a pronoun (her, it, them), it must go between the verb and the particle.

show around = transitive (object) & separable (object in middle - okay)
    Can you show around? transitive
    Can you show around Jenny?
    Can you show Jenny around?
Can you show around her? separable
    Can you show her around?

★ transitive = needs an object
★ separable = the object pronoun must go between the verb and particle

  • IDEA 4 | Some phrasal verbs are transitive and inseparable. They use an object. The object cannot go between the base verb and the particle.

get over = transitive (object) & inseparable (object in middle - not okay)
    Rob got over. transitive
    Rob got over the flu.
Rob got the flu over. inseparable
    Rob got over it.
    Rob got it over. inseparable

★ transitive = needs an object
★ inseparable = the object cannot go between the verb and particle

  • IDEA 5 | Most phrasal verbs have many different meanings.

get on   »   enter a bus, plane, train
        He got on the bus.
      »   have a friendly relationship
Jenny and Rob get on well.
    hang on   »   wait
Can you hang on a minute?
