Chapter 5 – How Arthur Was Chosen King
Sir Ector was not so easily satisfied. He took both boys to the church, and there he made Kay swear on the Bible how he had come by the sword. Kay was silent for a moment, then told the truth. "My brother Arthur brought it to me," he said.
Sir Ector turned to Arthur. "How did you get this sword?"
"Sir," said Arthur, "when I came back for my brother's sword, there was nobody at home to help me. I did not want Kay to be without a sword, so I rode to the churchyard and pulled it from the stone. It gave me no difficulty at all."
"Were there any knights guarding the sword?" asked Sir Ector.
"None," said Arthur.
Sir Ector was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "Arthur, I believe you must be king of this land."
"Why me?" said Arthur. "For what reason?"
"Because God wills it," said Sir Ector. "No man should ever have been able to draw that sword except the one who is the rightful king of England. But let us be certain. Put the sword back in the stone, and pull it out again."
"That is easily done," said Arthur, and he put it back. Sir Ector took hold of the handle and pulled with all his strength. The sword did not move. Kay tried also, and failed.
Then Arthur took the handle again and drew the sword out lightly, as if it were nothing.
Sir Ector and Kay fell to their knees before him. Arthur was distressed to see this, above all his father kneeling before him.
"Rise, dear father," he said. "What are you doing?"
"I am not your father, Arthur," said Sir Ector. "I am not your father, nor is Kay your brother by blood. A man brought you to me as a newborn child and asked me to raise you as my own. I did so first out of duty, and then out of love. But I do not know who your true parents are."
Arthur began to weep. Of all the things that would come to him — the crown, the kingdom, the glory — nothing grieved him so much in that moment as knowing that Sir Ector was not his father.
But not all the lords were satisfied. Many of the great barons were angry and ashamed. They said it was a disgrace to the kingdom to be ruled by a boy of unknown birth. They refused to accept the result.
So, the Archbishop announced that the matter would be decided again at Candlemas, and knights were set to guard the sword day and night.
But at Candlemas, Arthur drew the sword again just as easily, and still the barons refused. The same thing happened at Easter, and again at Pentecost. Each time Arthur pulled the sword from the stone without effort, and each time the great lords found a reason to delay.
It was only after the feast of Pentecost, with the common people crying out that they wanted Arthur as their king, that the barons finally gave way.
Arthur: Your sword was stolen, Kay. But here's Excalibur.
Sir Ector: Kay? Did you free Excalibur from the stone?
Kay: Yes. No, I didn't. Arthur did.
Crowd: The sword! The sword!
Sir Ector: You freed it, Arthur?
Arthur: I did, Father. I beg your forgiveness.
Sir Ector: You must put it back.
Sir Ector: Now, try to draw it again, Arthur.
Uryens: Wait! I, Uryens, will try. Stand back.
Crowd: Let the boy try!
Sir Ector: Let the boy try!
The Archbishop: Let the boy try!
Sir Ector: Come on, Arthur. Don't be afraid.
Crowd: We have our king! Thanks be to God!
Arthur: Rise, father, please. I was your son before I became your king, if I am king.
Sir Ector: You are king. But more so, because you are not my son and I am not your father.
Arthur: Not my father? Then Kay is not my brother?
Sir Ector: Merlin the magician brought you to me when you were newly born and bade me raise you as my own. At
first I did so because I feared Merlin, but later... because I loved you.
Arthur: Who is my true father?
Sir Ector: Only Merlin can tell you that.
Arthur: And who is Merlin?
Merlin: I am Merlin.
Arthur: Whose son am I?
Merlin: You are the son of Uther and Igrayne. You are King Arthur.
Knight: Merlin, we haven't forgotten you. What trickery is this?
Uryens: He's trying to foist a fatherless boy upon us. Do you want a bastard as a king?
Knight: Lord Leondegrance, join us against the boy.
Leondegrance: I saw what I saw. The boy drew the sword. If a boy has been chosen, a boy shall be king.
Knight: No, I challenge that.
Sir Ector: The sword has been drawn.
Uryens: Are you with us or against us?
Leondegrance: Against you.
Arthur: Merlin!
