Chapter 5 – How Arthur Was Chosen King
After the death of King Uther, the kingdom was in great danger for a long time. Every powerful lord tried to make himself strong, and many believed they should be king. Then Merlin went to the Archbishop of Canterbury and advised him to send for all the lords and knights of the realm, commanding them to come to London by Christmas. The reason was this: that Jesus, who was born on that night, might in his great mercy show a miracle — and reveal who was the rightful king of England.
So, on Christmas morning, after the first mass was done, something wonderful appeared in the churchyard beside the high altar. There stood a great square stone, like marble, and in the middle of it was an anvil of steel. Stuck into the anvil was a beautiful sword, and written around it in gold letters were these words: Whoever pulls this sword from this stone and anvil is the rightful king born of all England.
The Archbishop commanded that no one touch the sword until all the masses were finished. When they were done, the lords came to look. Many who wished to be king tried to pull it out, but not one of them could move it. "The man who will achieve this sword is not here today," said the Archbishop. "But God will make him known."
A tournament was arranged for New Year's Day, so that the knights and lords would stay together. Among those who rode to the jousting were Sir Ector, who held great lands near London, his son Sir Kay, who had only recently been made a knight, and young Arthur, Kay's foster brother, who served as his squire.
As they rode toward the tournament, Kay suddenly realised he had left his sword at his father's lodgings. He asked Arthur to go back and fetch it. Arthur rode back quickly, but when he arrived, the house was locked and empty — everyone had gone to see the jousting.
Arthur was troubled. He did not want his brother to compete without a sword. Then he remembered the sword in the stone in the churchyard. He rode there, found no knights on guard, took hold of the handle, and pulled the sword out easily and without effort. He rode back and put it in his brother's hands.
When Kay saw the sword, he knew immediately what it was. He rode to his father Sir Ector and said: "Father, I have the sword from the stone. Therefore, I must be king of this land."
Sir Ector: Now remember, my sons, what I've told you. Pay no heed to these robber knights.
Sir Ector: You, Kay, be brave and honest and merciful... as a knight should be. And you, Arthur, be modest and true, and
help your brother to uphold the good name of Morven.
Sir Ector: I remember my first joust. It looks far worse than it feels.
Leodegrance: Camelyarde! Camelyarde!
Archbishop: God, send us a true king. We are unworthy, but the land bleeds, the people suffer. We have sinned, but on this Easter Day,
when Christ rose from the dead, may one knight here through victory in arms find the grace to draw the sword and be king.
Leodegrance: By my right of victory, by my blood, give me the power.
Knight: Leodegrance!
Sir Ector: Arthur, where is Kay's sword? A good squire doesn't forget his knight's sword.
Arthur: I left it in the tent, father.
Sir Ector: Well, hurry then and get it.
Arthur: Stolen!
Kay: Father, I don't see what's keeping him.
Sir Ector: Well hurry! You'll miss your chance!
