Discussion 논의 Questões de discussão Discusión Обговорення

  1. In Lesson 5, you learned mal-, "bad." Now you know bene-, "good." Many English words come in good/bad pairs: benefit / malfunction, benediction / malediction, benevolent / malevolent.
What do you think malevolent means? Can you find any other good/bad pairs?
  2. The word spirit comes from spir, "breathe."
Why might people long ago have connected breath with a person's spirit or soul? What happens to a person's breath when they die?
  3. In ancient Greek, the word psyche meant both "soul" and "butterfly."
Why do you think a butterfly became a symbol of the soul or mind? (Hint: think back to metamorphosis in Lesson 5.)
  4. Both police and politics come from Greek polis, "city."
How are police officers and politicians connected to city life? Is that connection still true today?
  5. Many phobias have Greek or Latin names: hydrophobia (water), claustrophobia (closed spaces), arachnophobia (spiders).
Use stems from this course to invent a name for a new phobia. (Example: chronophobia = fear of time) What does your phobia mean?
  6. Philadelphia comes from phil + adelphos, "brother": the City of Brotherly Love.
If you could give your own city a Greek or Latin nickname using stems from this course, what would it be?
